The Qur’an mentions:
“And it is He who spread out the earth, and set thereon mountains standing firm and (flowing) rivers: and fruit of every kind He made in pairs, two and two: He draweth the night as a veil o’er the Day. Behold, verily in these things there are signs for those who consider!”
Other translations of the above verse:
Sahih International: And it is He who spread the earth and placed therein firmly set mountains and rivers; and from all of the fruits He made therein two mates; He causes the night to cover the day. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.
Pickthall: And He it is Who spread out the earth and placed therein firm hills and flowing streams, and of all fruits He placed therein two spouses (male and female). He covereth the night with the day. Lo! herein verily are portents for people who take thought.
Yusuf Ali: And it is He who spread out the earth, and set thereon mountains standing firm and (flowing) rivers: and fruit of every kind He made in pairs, two and two: He draweth the night as a veil o’er the Day. Behold, verily in these things there are signs for those who consider!
Shakir: And He it is Who spread the earth and made in it firm mountains and rivers, and of all fruits He has made in it two kinds; He makes the night cover the day; most surely there are signs in this for a people who reflect.
Muhammad Sarwar: It is God who spread out the earth and fixed mountains and placed rivers therein. He made a pair of every fruit and made the night cover the day. All this is evidence (of the existence of God) for the people who think.
Mohsin Khan: And it is He Who spread out the earth, and placed therein firm mountains and rivers and of every kind of fruits He made Zawjain Ithnain (two in pairs – may mean two kinds or it may mean: of two sorts, e.g. black and white, sweet and sour, small and big, etc.) He brings the night as a cover over the day. Verily, in these things, there are Ayat (proofs, evidences, lessons, signs, etc.) for people who reflect.
Arberry: It is He who stretched out the earth and set therein firm mountains and rivers, and of every fruit He placed there two kinds, covering the day with the night. Surely in that are signs for a people who reflect.
The Qur’an also mentions:
“And of everything We have created pairs.” (Qur’aan 51:49)
Other translations of the above verse:
Sahih International: And of all things We created two mates; perhaps you will remember.
Pickthall: And all things We have created by pairs, that haply ye may reflect.
Yusuf Ali: And of every thing We have created pairs: That ye may receive instruction.
Shakir: And of everything We have created pairs that you may be mindful.
Muhammad Sarwar: We have created everything in pairs so that perhaps you may take heed.
Mohsin Khan: And of everything We have created pairs, that you may remember (the Grace of Allah).
Arberry: And of everything created We two kinds; haply you will remember.
The Qur’an also mentions the below verse, which includes things that the humans do not know at present and may discover later. Is there more to discover? Has it already been discovered? God knows best.
“Glory to Allah, Who created In pairs all things that The earth produces, as well as Their own (human) kind And (other) things of which They have no knowledge.” (Qur’an 36:36)
Other translations of the above verse:
Sahih International: Exalted is He who created all pairs – from what the earth grows and from themselves and from that which they do not know.
Pickthall: Glory be to Him Who created all the sexual pairs, of that which the earth groweth, and of themselves, and of that which they know not!
Yusuf Ali: Glory to Allah, Who created in pairs all things that the earth produces, as well as their own (human) kind and (other) things of which they have no knowledge.
Shakir: Glory be to Him Who created pairs of all things, of what the earth grows, and of their kind and of what they do not know.
Muhammad Sarwar: All glory belongs to the One Who has created pairs out of what grow from the earth, out of their soul and out of that which they do not know.
Mohsin Khan: Glory be to Him, Who has created all the pairs of that which the earth produces, as well as of their own (human) kind (male and female), and of that which they know not.
Arberry: Glory be to Him, who created all the pairs of what the earth produces, and of themselves, and of what they know not.
The above Qur’anic verses mention the fact that all creatures, whether living beings or solid matter, are created in pairs. This means that this phenomenon does not only apply to animals and plants. The verses do not refer exclusively to pairs of sexes or to sexual reproduction alone; rather, it is much more general. It refers to everything that was created.
Amazingly, this was gradually realised recently. It is now even suggested that celestial bodies dispersed in the infinite cosmos have their invisible counterpart termed ‘Black Holes’. These Black Holes are thought to be the negative form of matter in the universe.
Millions of animal species discovered, classified and investigated only during the past couple of hundred years, were found to be invariably in “pairs”, male and female. Electron microscopy has also clarified that all living creatures, however minute, are in pairs. The smallest microbes, viruses, and bacteria also have their counterpart antibodies.
It is not just the animal world that are in pairs, the botanical world is in pairs too! Over 1400 years ago, humans at the time of the
revelation of the Qur’an were not aware that the plants were in pairs, apart from those of the palm tree.
It was only after the discovery of microscopes along time after the Qur’an was revealed that human beings discovered that plants have male organs (stamens) and female organs (ovaries) and that the wind, together with other factors, carries the pollen from one type to the opposite one so that reproduction can take place.
Over 250,000 flowering plants have been discovered so far and it has been found that they also reproduce sexually. They have both female (ovaries containing eggs) and male (stamens carrying pollens); either combined in the same flower or in different flowers. Fertilisation occurs when pollens are transferred by wind or insects such as Bee’s to an adjacent flower.
On the other hand, non-flowering plants amounting to over 150,000 species and reproduce in a double staged cycle of sexual and asexual reproduction. Yet, the asexual reproduction stage is essentially a process of breaking up of the DNA “pair” of strands into two and followed by each of which reforming its complementary strand. So a new “pair” of identical DNA molecules results in the cell, just before it divides into a “pair” of identical cells.
The same applies to the asexual reproduction of bacteria. Each bacterium consists of a single cell, the smallest biological unit able
to function independently. A single bacterium reproduces the same way explained above, by splitting into a pair of identical cells.
As we have seen, cell division occurs through the process of DNA replication, in which the two strands of the DNA molecules
are separated and each strand resynthesizes a complementary strand to itself. So, “asexual” reproduction of bacteria involves the DNA “pair” of strands splitting and reformation into a new “pair” of cells.
Here is another verse within the Qur’an which has been proven correct by modern science. God has indeed created everything in pairs and we now believe this because science has proven this using technology which did not exist over 1400 years ago.
God knows best
