Today, we are aware that the mountains are not standing still or motionless as they seem to be, but are actually in motion. It can be hard to believe.
A verse within the Qur’an mentions:
And you will see the mountains presuming them fixed whereas they will be moving like the clouds; this is Allah’s making, Who created all things with wisdom; indeed He is Informed of what you do. (Qur’an, 27:88)
Other translations of the above verse:
Sahih International: And you see the mountains, thinking them rigid, while they will pass as the passing of clouds. [It is] the work of Allah , who perfected all things. Indeed, He is Acquainted with that which you do.
Pickthall: And thou seest the hills thou deemest solid flying with the flight of clouds: the doing of Allah Who perfecteth all things. Lo! He is Informed of what ye do.
Yusuf Ali: Thou seest the mountains and thinkest them firmly fixed: but they shall pass away as the clouds pass away: (such is) the artistry of Allah, who disposes of all things in perfect order: for he is well acquainted with all that ye do.
Shakir: And you see the mountains, you think them to be solid, and they shall pass away as the passing away of the cloud– the handiwork of Allah Who has made every thing thoroughly; surely He is Aware of what you do.
Muhammad Sarwar: You think the mountains are solid. In fact, they move like clouds. It is God’s technique which has established everything perfectly. He is well Aware of what you do.
Mohsin Khan: And you will see the mountains and think them solid, but they shall pass away as the passing away of the clouds. The Work of Allah, Who perfected all things, verily! He is Well-Acquainted with what you do.
Arberry: and thou shalt see the mountains, that thou supposest fixed, passing by like clouds — God’s handiwork, who has created everything very well. He is aware of the things you do.
The below image demonstrates how Earth has expanded and formed over the years.
This discovery was only made as a result of research carried out at the beginning of the 20th century. Scientists explain this movement of the Earth’s crust as follows:
“The crust and the uppermost part of the mantle, with a thickness of about 100kms are divided into segments called plates. There are six major plates, and several small ones. According to the theory called plate tectonics, these plates move about on Earth, carrying continents and ocean floor with them. Continental motion has been measured at from 1-5 cm per year. As the plates continue to move about, this will produce a slow change in Earth’s geography. Each year, for instance, the Atlantic Ocean becomes slightly wider.” (Source: Sheets, Gardner, and Howe, General Science, 305)
Today, modern science uses the term ‘Continental Drift‘ for this motion of the mountains.
The verse above also emphasizes that the Earth not only rotates but that it also has a direction of rotation. The main reason why cloud masses are pulled from West to East is the direction in which the Earth rotates. As we know, our Earth spins from West to East. This scientific fact was only recently discovered by modern Science, but was revealed within the Qur’an over 1,400 years ago, at a time when the Earth was believed to be flat and the mountains held up the skies.
God knows best
