Who Was Jesus?

Islam honors all the prophets who were sent to man kind by God (Allah). Muslims highly respect all prophets in general, but Jesus (pbuh) in particular, because he was one of the prophets who foretold the coming of the prophet Muhammad (pbuh). Muslims also await the second coming of Jesus (pbuh) and consider him one of the greatest of Allah’s prophets sent to man kind. A Muslim does not refer to him simply as Jesus, but normally adds the phrase “peace be upon him (pbuh)” as a sign of respect.

Most Christians are amazed to know the great respect Muslims have for Jesus (pbuh). Muslims agree that Jesus (pbuh) had a miraculous birth, he brought people alive from the dead and healed through the help from God (Allah).

So if Muslims agree with Jesus why don’t they agree with the Bible?
Muslims believe the original Bible (In-jeel – the gospel) which was revealed to Jesus (pbuh) and the Torah to Moses at the time were correct and a revelation from God (Allah), but were revealed for the people of that time and not for the whole of humanity.

God (Allah) sent down to Jesus the In-jeel (the gospel). Muslims believe that the Bible that we have today is authored by people who came after Jesus (pbuh). It is a known fact amongst Scholars that not a single word in the Bible was instructed to be written or written by Jesus himself during his time on Earth. The Bible was written after Jesus was risen by Allah (God).

Christians argue that the older Bible language is difficult to understand as not many speak Hebrew/Greek today. Muslims argue that if the Bible was sent down for all of Humanity, why was the Hebrew language chosen? On the other hand, the Qur’an was revealed in Arabic and 1400 years later, Muslims from around the World can read, understand and have memorised the complete Qur’an off by heart. Every Muslim is able to read or have memorised some part of the Qur’an in it’s original language.

The Qur’an mentions it was sent down for the whole of humanity and this makes sense as over 1400 years later, the Qur’an continues to keep up with us and modern Science.

Muslims do not believe the Gospels which were written later (the book of Luke, John, and so forth), after Jesus (pbuh) was raised by God. Muslims who have studied the Red Letter Bible argue that no where does Jesus (pbuh) mention ‘He was God’ or to ‘Worship him’. The text high lighted in red within the Bible were the words of Jesus (pbuh) according to Christians, but no where does he mention he was God.

As far as I am aware and from my research, no other religion in the world respects and dignifies Jesus as Islam has done. Muslims agree Jesus (pbuh) had a miraculous birth. The Qur’an confirms his virgin birth (a chapter within the Qur’an is (Mariam -Mary). Mary is considered to have been one of the purest women in all creation. Just imagine at the time, when the verse was revealed, the prophet Muhammad (pbuh) had to reveal the verse from God to the Arabs, that (Mary) is considered the purest women in all creation. If the prophet Muhammad (pbuh) made up the Qur’an as some religions believe, why would the Prophet (pbuh) want to choose Mary out of all women.

The Qur’an describes the birth of Jesus (pbuh) within the verse mentioned below:

“Behold!’ the Angel said, God has chosen you, and purified you, and chosen you the women of all nations. Mary, God gives you good news of a word from Him, whose name shall be the Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, honored in this world and in the Hereafter, and one of those brought near to God.
He shall speak to the people from his cradle and in maturity, and he shall be of the righteous. She said: “My Lord! How shall I have a son when no man has touched me?’ He said: “Even so; God creates what He will. When He decrees a thing, He says to it, ‘Be!’ and it is.” (Qur’an, 3:42-47)

Muslims also believe that Jesus was born immaculately, through the same power which had brought Eve to life and Adam into being without a father or a mother.

Another verse within the Qur’an mentions:

“Truly, the likeness of Jesus with God is as the likeness of Adam. He created him of dust, and then said to him, ‘Be!’ and he was.” (Qur’an, 3:59)

During his prophetic mission, Jesus (pbuh) performed many miracles. The Quran mentions Jesus (pbuh) saying:

“I have come to you with a sign from your Lord: I make for you out of clay, as it were, the figure of a bird, and breathe into it and it becomes a bird by God’s leave. And I heal the blind, and the lepers, and I raise the dead by God’s leave.” (Qur’an, 3:49)

Muhammad and Jesus, as well as the other prophets (Peace Be Upon Them All), were all sent to mankind to confirm the belief in one God. This is referred to in the Qur’an where Jesus (pbuh) is reported as saying that he came:

“To attest the law which was before me, and to make lawful to you part of what was forbidden you; I have come to you with a sign from your Lord, so fear God and obey me.” (Qur’an, 3:50)

It doesn’t stop here, Prophet Muhammad’s (pbuh) name, “Ahmed”, was also found in the Dead Sea Scrolls (Old Testament), and it was mentioned precisely in the Qur’an for the Prophet to be foretold by this very name, Ahmed (The praised one):

“And when Jesus the Son of Mary said, O children of Israel, verily I am the Apostle of God sent unto you, confirming the law which was delivered before me, and bringing good tidings of an Apostle who shall come after me, and whose name shall be Ahmed. And when he produced unto them evident miracles, they said, this is manifest sorcery.  (Qur’an, 61:6)”

Other translations of the above verse:
Sahih International: And [mention] when Jesus, the son of Mary, said, “O children of Israel, indeed I am the messenger of Allah to you confirming what came before me of the Torah and bringing good tidings of a messenger to come after me, whose name is Ahmad.” But when he came to them with clear evidences, they said, “This is obvious magic.”
Pickthall: And when Jesus son of Mary said: O Children of Israel! Lo! I am the messenger of Allah unto you, confirming that which was (revealed) before me in the Torah, and bringing good tidings of a messenger who cometh after me, whose name is the Praised One. Yet when he hath come unto them with clear proofs, they say: This is mere magic.
Yusuf Ali: And remember, Jesus, the son of Mary, said: “O Children of Israel! I am the messenger of Allah (sent) to you, confirming the Law (which came) before me, and giving Glad Tidings of a Messenger to come after me, whose name shall be Ahmad.” But when he came to them with Clear Signs, they said, “this is evident sorcery!”
Shakir: And when Isa son of Marium said: O children of Israel! surely I am the messenger of Allah to you, verifying that which is before me of the Taurat and giving the good news of an Messenger who will come after me, his name being Ahmad, but when he came to them with clear arguments they said: This is clear magic.
Muhammad Sarwar: Jesus, son of Mary, said to the Israelites, “I am the Messenger of God sent to you. I confirm the Torah which is in existence and give you the glad news of the coming of a Messenger who will come after me named Ahmad.” When this Messenger came to them with all the proofs (to support his truthfulness), they said, “He is simply a magician”.
Mohsin Khan: And (remember) when ‘Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), said: “O Children of Israel! I am the Messenger of Allah unto you confirming the Taurat [(Torah) which came] before me, and giving glad tidings of a Messenger to come after me, whose name shall be Ahmed . But when he (Ahmed i.e. Muhammad SAW) came to them with clear proofs, they said: “This is plain magic.”
Arberry: And when Jesus son of Mary said, ‘Children of Israel, I am indeed the Messenger of God to you, confirming the Torah that is before me, and giving good tidings of a Messenger who shall come after me, whose name shall be Ahmad.’ Then, when he brought them the clear signs, they said, ‘This is a manifest sorcery.’

Prophet Jesus (pbuh) here has shed the light on the old Prophecy of the coming of Prophet, Ahmed.  So Ahmed was prophesied before Christ and also during Christ’s lifetime. Amazing.

According to the Matthew (Bible):
“And the multitude said, This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee.” (Matthew 21:11)

This was Jesus (pbuh). He was a mighty prophet of Allah (God). He was sent like other prophets to deliver the message of his ONE and only ONE God.

Also, according to Luke (Bible):
“And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people.” (Luke 24:19)

Jesus was a true messenger of God. He was sent by God to deliver His will. The Bible says in John:

“I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.” (John 5:30)

The above verse shows the true characteristics of a prophet. They do as they are commanded by God. The Prophets were sent to deliver a message, and the only difference between them and other humans is their utmost righteousness, “mighty in deed and word” according to (Luke 24:19).

They are the best of all the people of their time. They are the only ones who could bear and act upon the commandments of God completely and fully. They are loved by God because of that, and their nearness to God comes from that.

The same applies to all other prophets. Adam, Noah, Abraham, Ismael, Isaac, Jacob, Jonah, Moses, Jesus, Jonas, Muhammad(Peace Be Upon Them All) and all the other prophets shared the same qualities. They all fully abided by what God commanded them. The Qur’an mentions the below verse:

“Say: (O’ Our Apostle Muhammad!) (unto the People) ‘We believe in God, and what hath been sent down to us, and what hath been sent down to Abraham and Ishmael, and Isaac, and Jacob, and the Tribes, and what was given to Moses, and Jesus and the Prophets from their Lord, we make no difference between any of them, and we unto Him are muslims’” (Qur’an 3:84).

Note in the above verse from the Qur’an. “what was given to Moses, and Jesus” is not the same as the current Bible written by Paul, John, Luke, Matthew, and so on. Rather they were the true books of Moses and Jesus and a message from God at the time.

Was Jesus Crucified?
According to Muslims, Jesus (pbuh) was raised to God.

The Qur’an mentions:
And [for] their saying, “Indeed, we have killed the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, the messenger of Allah .” And they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him; but [another] was made to resemble him to them. And indeed, those who differ over it are in doubt about it. They have no knowledge of it except the following of assumption. And they did not kill him, for certain. (Qur’an, 4:157)

Rather, Allah raised him to Himself. And ever is Allah Exalted in Might and Wise. (Qur’an, 4:158)

So you are now aware of the great respect Muslims have for Jesus (pbuh). Jesus (pbuh) and all the prophets are respected highly by Muslims. You will have heard the saying, best of both worlds. Muslims seem to have the Best of both Worlds as they love all the prophets and one of those prophets is Jesus (pbuh). It was a great experience gaining this knowledge.
